Daughters - City song

City Song is a nihilist intellectual horror movie. The cinematic power behind every element that composes the track make it one of the scariest musical experiences we've had in the last few years. And yet, the intense feelings that it evokes aren't as immediate of the ones in a gore bloodbath, but those of a philosophical suffocation in a dystopian bleak city that engorges the individual.

The opening line "The city is an empty glass" works as a leitmotif, and through repetition, it shows the poetic power it contains, the richness in meaning about the meaningless and the new identity of a band that took an eight year hiatus to transform themselves from riotous punks to dark prophets of an inevitable cataclysm.

The post apocalyptic landscape painted in the lyrics contrasts against the industrial noise of the heavy drums and guitars: the memory of the horrors that led to this destruction, the groans and distorted sounds only accentuate the violence and the pain that was inflicted. We might not be entirely aware of what happened or how it happened, but regaining consciousness in the aftermath of the acts, contemplating the destruction laying at our feet, we start connecting the dots on how is it that we, collectively, led to this point of horror. The music finish, but we are able to still hear ominous words: "The breath is long. And the fires are out. The waters sit still".
